Ceremonies in Jogya

GEREBEG
The ceremony is held on the 12th of Maulud-the third month of Javanese calendar-to commemorate the birth of Mohammed the Holy Prophet. For about a week, the people of Yogyakarta celebrate this event with a festival called Sekaten.


At the end of this festival the Kraton's soldiers in their traditional and colourful uniforms will be on marching-squad escort the Gunungan (mountain-shaped cones, containing rice and ornamented with vegetables, fruits, and other foodstuffs) carried from a quarter of the Sultan's Palace to the Great Mosque.


LABUHAN
Labuhan ceremony is held to celebrate the birth of Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono. The offering from the Yogyakarta's Sultanate Palace consist of food, and cutting of fingernails and hair of Sultan that will be thrown to the South Sea. The offering intends to be presented to Goddess of the South Sea, Kanjeng Ratu Kidul. It is that the performing the ceremony, the King and the people of Yogyakarta will gwttheir welfare.


SAPARAN
Saparan is an offering ceremony done by digging limestone found in this area. According to the research done by the geologists, the limestone are already 50 million years old, and only three hills are over 50 million years of age and only three hills of this kind that can be found in the world. People believe without bringing the offering, they may encounter difficulties and disaster. even though the hills have a most completely gone and only oiles of limestone which are left nowadays, the tradition of giving offering still goes on in the second moth of Javanese calender: Sapar. That is why the ceremony is called "Saparan".
